Become a Parent Coach

How do I become an ABC Parent Coach?

Thank you so much for your interest in ABC! We are currently disseminating ABC at both national and international sites. We value implementation with fidelity and require intensive training and supervision of our trainees throughout our training period. If you are interested and the training model appears to be a good fit for your organization or agency, please contact us.

Selection of Parent Coaches

We use an evidence-based screening process to predict which individuals are likely to have success training in ABC. We can do this screening remotely through video conferencing with potential coaches. The screening typically takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Initial Training – Single Models

Initial training in a single model is offered for ABC-Infant and ABC-Early Childhood. Training includes theoretical and practical orientation to the intervention, practice with “In-the-Moment” commenting and coding, review of session content, consultation concerning site-specific implementation, and supervision planning.

ABC-Infant

ABC-Infant is designed for parents of infants between 6 and 24 months of age. Initial training for parent coaches involves a 2-day in-person meeting or virtual training across 3 half-days. The supervision period for training in ABC-Infant is 6 months.

ABC-Early Childhood

ABC-Early Childhood is designed for parents of children between 24 and 48 months of age. Initial training for parent coaches involves a 2-day in-person meeting or virtual training across 3 half-days. The supervision period for training in ABC-Early Childhood is 6 months.

Initial Training – Combined Models

Initial training in multiple ABC models is offered for the following:

ABC-Newborn/Infant

Initial combined training in ABC-Newborn and ABC-Infant is designed for parents of infants from birth to 24 months of age. Initial training for parent coaches involves a 3-day in-person meeting or virtual training across 4 half-days. The supervision period for combined training in ABC-Newborn and ABC-Infant is 9 months.

ABC-Infant/Early Childhood

Initial combined training in ABC-Infant and ABC-Early Childhood is designed for parents of children from 6 months to 48 months of age. Initial training for parent coaches involves a 3-day in-person meeting or virtual training across 4 half-days. The supervision period for combined training in ABC-Infant and ABC-Early Childhood is 12 months.

Supplemental Training

Supplemental training in ABC-Newborn and ABC-Early Childhood is offered to parent coaches already certified in ABC-Infant. The Newborn intervention is designed for newborns from birth through 6 months of age and the Early Childhood intervention is designed for children between 24 and 48 months. Each additional training involves a half-day session and 6-month supervised training period.

Supervision

Supervision is conducted via video conferencing using a HIPAA-compliant software, Zoom. Trainees have 2 supervision meetings per week: General Clinical Supervision (1 hour) and In-the-Moment Commenting Supervision (30 min). The time commitment for session preparation, visit, and supervision is 4 hours per week for one case. If a parent coach is working with multiple families, the total time commitment may increase accordingly; however, the supervision time remains fixed at 1.5 hours per week, regardless of the number of active cases.
